Relocating to Atlanta

If you’re planning on moving to the metro Atlanta area, here is some information you might be interested in.

What is “metro Atlanta”?

Metro Atlanta consists of 28 counties.  Only Fulton, Gwinnett, Dekalb, Cobb, and Clayton Counties claim more than 250,000 residents, so if you’re thinking that “metro Atlanta” means “busy city” that’s not always correct.  In fact, Butts, Dawson, Jasper, Pike, Lamar and Meriwether Counties are all considered “metro Atlanta” but each one is populated by less than 25,000 people.

I hear the traffic is bad...
Well, you heard right.  After LA, New York and Boston, Atlanta is the fourth most congested city in the US.  Atlanta is served by I-75, I-85, I-285 and I-20, with state roads GA-400 and GA-316 alleviating the congestion in the northern suburbs.
Locally, I-285 is known as the Perimeter, since it runs in a circle around the city.  You may hear references to people living or working ITP (INSIDE the Perimeter) or OTP (OUTSIDE the Perimeter).  Where traffic is concerned, you might hear about the Inner and Outer Loop (clockwise and anti-clockwise routes on I-285, respectively), the “Downtown Connector”, which is where I-75 and I-85 merge for a few miles in the heart of the city.  Check out
Georgia Navigator for traffic information.
